From the Tarte Shape Tape foundation fiasco to the comeback of the ABH Amrezy highlighter, 2018 has the best and worst of the makeup world. Since the fall of 2017, the Fenty Effect has set a new standard for complexion products. Expectations are high, Twitter reactions are plentiful, and tea is always hot. But has any progress been made? This is how five of this year’s most hyped makeup releases did in the diversity category.
This year’s annual Victoria Secret Fashion Show, which aired on December 2nd, was no different from past shows--the models were all one size (skinny), cis, and their skin tones varied within a narrow spectrum of beige (with the exception of a few). Although the brand claims that the runway was 50% models of color this year, one thing was for certain: they clearly haven’t learned anything about the importance of diversity.

On November 1st, 2018, Atima Lui, CEO and Founder of NUDEST spoke on a panel in the 2018 Pi Group Annual Speaker Series on Artificial Intelligence at WeWork Bryant Park. Atima was the youngest of the eight individuals who participated in the discussion. The event was organized by Perpetual Insights, a Professional Recruitment and Talent Advisory firm, which has been named one of Inc Magazine’s 5000 fastest growing companies in the US in 2018.
The internet has been buzzing recently about a black digital model named Shudu that was created by Cameron-James Wilson, a white photographer from England. Shudu has gained a huge following on Instagram, as has Nfon, a male black model Wilson also created using 3D imaging.
